Only when I lose myself

Thank you so much to everyone who left such lovely and kind comments on my last post, and I'm feeling so much better today. It's a beautiful day here where I'm living, we are in Autumn now but today is one of those gorgeous end of summer days, slightly crisp but with clear blue skies and the sun warm and happy.

I got to wondering, if with the internet, and blogging and things like Tumblr and Flickr, if as many people still keep good old fashioned paper journals or if the web is influencing our lives not to do that as much anymore?

I started my first paper journal when I was about eleven, and I kept it up all through school and for quite a while after. I wrote just about every day, at least every week, sticking in pictures and memento's as well. I poured out my heart, and my innermost feelings, and it really helped me get along with life especially at those times I felt like there was noone I could talk to.

Nowdays I still keep paper journals, but they are more artistic with lots of painting and collage and lettering, and not so much writing because I don't seem to have that same need anymore, I guess I'm lucky that when I am troubled I have people that I can talk to. But I still very much enjoy keeping paper journals as an outlet for art and creativity.

I think that girls and women especially often like to keep journals, in the past on paper, and I wonder if now a lot more people are blogging instead, and how much that changes the traditional practise of keeping a diary and the way people express themselves?

I think you can be a lot more honest in a private paper journal and really get your feelings out instead of keeping them bottled up inside, and writing your feelings and thoughts down forces you to make sense of them instead of having them jumbled up inside your head, and so you understand yourself better. On the other hand blogging is social and public, so people are not as likely to really splash out with their inner feelings in such depth, but, you make a network of online friends who encourage you and sometimes give advice and let you know they feel the same way so you realise you're not alone.

Yes, so it's interesting to think about how the internet is perhaps changing the way we communicate with ourselves, perhaps there are people who do both, paper and blogs, but I think that probably a lot of girls who would have kept paper journals nowdays blog instead.

I've never been a huge fan of food photography - or rather it just wasn't something on my radar or that I had any interest in. Then I happened to stumble on Tartelette, an absolutely beautiful recipe and food photography blog and I was quite blown away by the photo's - not to mention how much I'd love to be able to taste all the recipes! In case you're wondering, the bottom photo is a lemon curd and chamomille vanilla mousse verrine, not something I have ever heard of before, but OMG I want to eat it!

Well, naturally my eyes then got sucked into the world of food blogs and I landed up on the also gorgeous photography of Cannelle et Vanille. Not only heavenly food photo's, but amazing flower photo's as well. All I can say right now is that I want to be able to lick this spoon, I don't care how disgusting that may sound..mmmm....chocolate truffle cake!

And then, before I could help myself, I wandered on to Aaplemint to visually sample the delights of gola sherbert from India, date-ball sweets, and date and roasted almond ice-cream. Now I seriously have to stop this before I end up cleaning drool off my keyboard - not a thrilling thought.

  4. I don't think I'll ever be able to fully replace my paper journal with my blog, because -like you said- the internet is so public and I prefer to keep my inner thoughts to no-one but myself.

The food photography is mouthwatering (especially since I didn't have breakfast yet). I'll check the sites when I get home, and maybe even try out some of the recipes for Easter.

You're quickly becoming one of my favourite blogs btw, everything you post is so beautiful :)

  5. I did start a journal but ended up giving up on it! I also did the same with a scrapbook type - what can I say I'm bad at sticking with things, haha. I'm going to try and start a picture journal again soon though because they can be a lot of fun!

I'm really hungry now after seeing those foody pictures, eek!

  6. Lovely post. I kept a journal when I was younger, and it's still fun to look back and read about how I thought and what I did. Nowadays I don't.
I do agree with what you said about blogging - I think it might make people write journals less... but then again, that's very different from writing a diary. You can't be as personal.

  8. Tarlette is amazing...so is Canelle et Vanille, and my personal favorite almost "dead" food-photo blog is Nordljus - http://www.nordljus.co.uk/ (it is rarely updated now :(

  11. beautiful post. When I was younger, I went through about five or six journals, but over time I stopped. I still put an entry in once in a while, but I don't feel the need to write as much as before.

  12. I love keeping sketchbook journals but I'm always either too lazy or never have enough time - I just bought a new Moleskine today though so I'm hoping for lots of new creativity to come!

I feel like a bit of an idiot asking this but what on earth are those colourful sandwich type biscuit things?? Are they edible?? They look like something you might buy from Lush! I've never seen them before in my life!

Great Post - as usual! xxx
